Dorset Historic Churches Trust assists, by grant or interest free loan, repairs to the fabric of Dorset's Christian churches of all denominations; and gives guidance and help in attracting other grant aid from a wide range of donors.
Since the Dorset Historic Churches Trust was founded by the late Sir Owen Morshead in 1959 it has assisted more than 250 churches in the County. At that time it was mainly concerned with churches over 150 years old whose preservation was then considered important. These range from pre-Norman Wareham St Martin to Longham United Reform Church built in classical style in the opening years of Queen Victoria's reign. In the last forty years we have become much more appreciative of Gothic Revival and Edwardian architecture and its importance as part of our heritage. This has greatly increased the number of churches of all denominations with which the Trust is now concerned. Many of these Victorian churches were constructed on an ambitious scale relative to the population of the communities they were built to serve, and the extent of the repairs which in many cases are now becoming urgent, is commensurate with their size. Meanwhile, the need for essential repairs and maintenance of the older churches has in no way diminished, and the costs of this restoration with its high content of skilled workmanship has increased far faster than the general level of inflation.
We are in urgent need of all the financial help we can get if we are to preserve the great wealth of historic churches in the County for future generations. Please do all you can to assist us in this vital work. Please remember, unlike many charities, the Trust receives no financial assistance from the Government and has no paid staff, so practically all the money given is used to help churches in need. If you would like to help the Trust, please go to our 'Contact Us' page.
We are hugely grateful for any donations and all donors receive a copy of the Trust's Annual Report.
