This is an important Norman church complete with western tower and pyramidal stone roof. Of great interest is the Norman chancel arch with classic Norman chevron moulding, because there are half arches either side making the whole appear too large for the present building and giving rise to a theory that the whole arch might have been brought from elsewhere. There is, in fact, no documentary evidence for this notion.
During the 14c the reticulated east window was installed and during the 18c the south chapel was demolished, leaving just the squint, now a window. In 1864, John Hicks of Dorchester was retained to design a major overhaul of the building, but to retain as much of the old as possible. Note, the font is of this period.
The 1922 organ is by Messrs. Foskett and was designed by Noel Bonavia-Hunt for organ examinations at a music school. It has three manuals and was dedicated in 1958.
