The Central
Crossing

The central crossing looking north. This is the area immediately beneath the central tower, which demonstrates three stages of 12c decoration. The lowest stage has plain shafts with a simple arch, above is the 'Triforium' gallery with Purbeck marble shafting, which is set into the thickness of the tower walls and accessed by a special turret stairway from the north transept. Above the Triforium are a further set of arches with deeply recessed windows that allow light to stream in. Above this again, is the richly painted ceiling and decoration of 1912, which had previously been painted white.
