Church Crawls and Events

Article Index

DHCT’s celebrated Church Crawls offer you the opportunity to learn more about our wonderful architectural heritage. Two of our Trustees are experts in the fields of church history and architecture and of painted and stained glass. They lead a group of up to 30 Friends and their guests around a small selection of rural or urban churches sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge of their subjects. We meet at 10.30 and usually visit two churches before sharing a pub lunch, which provides plenty of time to meet Trustees and other Friends. Several more churches are interpreted in the afternoon before a cup of tea to round off the day. The Crawls take place 4 or 5 times a year and have become very popular.

The dates for 2016 were:

 Thursday 9th June

Wednesday 6 July

Thursday 8 September

Wednesday 26 October - Annual Friends Gathering – this year at Milton Abbey

 Programme for 2017:

Wednesday 10 May – meet at Affpuddle

Thursday 8 June – meet at Hinton St Mary

Wednesday 5 July – meet at Litton Cheney

Thursday 8th June 2017

Schedule:

10.00 for 10.30 Meet at St Peter, Hinton St Mary (DT10 1NA) Mrs Valerie Pitt-Rivers has very kindly invited us to have coffee with her before the start of the crawl. I quote from her email:

“Will do coffee in the Tithe Barn as there is an urn there & people very welcome to walk round garden if it`s a fine day.  There is a path from the church through to the garden so do use that.  You could all park in our tractor yard in lane just about opposite the church & go into church & to Tithe Barn from there – I will put out a car parking signs in the right place!  And  do come up our long drive (through our big gates off the B3092) if you like.  It would be a help if you could let me know approx. how many you expect nearer the time.”

So please let me know as soon as possible if you plan to join us on June 8th.

There is a charge of £10 each which covers the cost of the lunch.  Dr Tim Connor will speak to us about the architecture and history of each church and my speciality is the stained glass.

Parking is difficult at my cottage for lunch as it is a narrow lane, a neighbour has kindly said we can park in his drive or one can walk from the chapel at Gussage St Andrew as it is only a short walk down the lane. There are only spaces for 3 cars at mine so anyone who needs to park right here please say and I will keep a space for you. I will hand out a detailed map on reaching my cottage on the day but if anyone wants a large map of the whole day let me know as I have one I can post to you.

I do hope you will join us - do not hesitate to telephone me or email if you have any further queries.

Best wishes   Sue Smith

Wednesday July 6th - Church Crawl     Powerstock area

The plan for the crawl on Wednesday 6 July 2016 is as follows:

10.30am    Meet St Mary’ s church, Netherbury, DT6 5LR

11.30am   Church of St Mary, Beaminster, DT8 3BA

12.30 pm Mapperton – All Saints church – DT8 3NR followed by :

Pre-booked light lunch in the café at Mapperton

2.30 Visit St Mary Magdalene, North Poorton, DT6 3TH

3.30  StMary, Powerstock, DT6 3TD

Finishing (if the weather is fine) with tea in Myrtle Cottage garden, the home of Dr Tim Connor.

There is a charge of £10 each which covers the cost of the lunch.  Dr Tim Connor will speak to us about the architecture and history of each church and my speciality is the stained glass.

Parking is tricky in deepest Dorset - at Netherbury there is some parking at the top of the hill (sort of behind the church) which I would recommend for people who might find the steep cobbled path tricky. In Beaminster we will need to park where we can in the church/market square area. From Beaminster to North Poorton is a delightful drive through the countryside but at times it does look as if one is driving straight into a private garden!

I do hope you will join us - do not hesitate to telephone me or email if you have any further queries or would like a more detailed route map..  It is important to let me know if you are staying for lunch as I have to inform Mapperton of numbers in advance.

Best wishes   Sue Smith

Church Crawl to Portland, Thursday 8th September

10.30am for 11.00, meet at the Avalanche Memorial Church, also known as the Church of St Andrew, located in Southwell village. DT5 2EQ

12 noon – The Easton Methodist church - DT5 1BX

1.00pm   - Lunch at The White Stones café, just down the road from the Methodist Church.

2.15pm – All Saints Church, Easton, DT5 1HG – just round the corner from the café and on the opposite side of the square to the Methodist church.

3.15 pm – St George’s church, Reforne, Wide St, Portland DT5 2JP. - Vast and solitary, St George's is one of the most magnificent 18th-century church in Dorset. It rises from the rocky, treeless and dramatic peninsula of Portland and is surrounded by a sprawling churchyard which is a treasure trove of fabulous headstones and memorials that tell tales of murder, piracy and adventure.

Dr Tim Connor and Sue Smith will be your guides on this church crawl. There is a charge of £10.00 for the day and it would be very much appreciated if you could let Sue Smith know if you are planning to attend (so we can let the cafe know how many for lunch).
